"It was dawn over Santoña, the sea covered every corner, the tide was high, the sky was grey and the stillness of a deserted marsh flooded the landscape. There was not the slightest sign that the migration had begun. I wandered from one side of the endless marsh to the other: the tide began to go out, and only a few curlews broke the calm of the place with their strident singing. "As the day began to fade and hope dwindled, we discovered a group of turnstones resting on top of a rock. Suddenly a wave and the rising tide made them jump, and they started to roam every little corner of the tidal flats. They gave life to a landscape that seemed to be asleep. "It was then, when I thought I could not ask for more, that the sky tore its grey clouds apart and, amidst the rain, a rainbow passed through – painting the horizon with magic and sealing the afternoon in my memory."
